Artist's Statement

I want my paintings to give slowly, to challenge the viewer by not revealing their main strengths in one glance. I enjoy pieces that make me feel slightly uncomfortable in some way, and I often bring that feeling into my work.

Nature is an important part of my life and my work. I do not think of different parts of nature as separate, but being essentially derived from the same whole. I love things that are small or hidden, especially those that I cannot see unaided. Nature evolves around these things. Lichens, diatoms, radiolarians, microscopic photographs, images of space, plants, rocks, and fungi strongly inform my aesthetic.

My work is also greatly informed by my everyday life, and by my experiences of my culture and my observations of other cultures. I carefully form my life around myself, creating my own environment, a place where I decide, to some extent, what I consume. I shy away from censoring or controlling what comes out of this amalgamation of consumption, as I desire the connections and multiple meanings my subconscious forms to create the imagery in my work. I work in a variety of media, choosing what suits my mood or my goals at the time.

I find myself repeatedly drawn to incorporating beads, glitter, tinsel, lichen, metal, and other non-traditional materials into the acrylic of my paintings. I may also add or subtract from the physicality of the canvas. The play between natural and artificial in my materials augments the multi-facetedness of my imagery.
